Planning Your Pond
Click to see Larger Image Ok, first and foremost, safety...have you got young children? If so, is a pond really a good idea? Can you guarantee that they will always be supervised near it? Our son was nearly eleven when we built ours, so old enough to understand the safety issues and act sensibly around it. However, the neighbours children who were much younger tended to use our garden as an extension of their own, this was a safety concern, so before completion, we put up a 6 foot fence and gate with a child proof latch at the top!

You also need to think about where the pond is going to be in your garden. Trees for instance can be a real problem if they are over hanging the pond. A friend of mine had a small pond near her dividing fence, the apples from their neighbours apple tree all seemed to aim for the pond and quickly poisoned the water and killed the fish. Leaves will rot in the pond if not cleared daily and also poison the water if left.

It costs more than you think! We were quite lucky in that we were given the fancy bricks for the front, I found and dug the solid granite slabs out of the ground when I was clearing the site, obviously been used as a garden border years ago.
