Lining Your Pond
Click to see larger Image If like us you are using a flexible liner, you need to first line the pond with something to protect against stones and roots breaking through. Although you should have removed the worst, remember that roots keep growing and the weight of the water will really press the liner into the stones in the soil. Sand or old carpet is recommended, we used both, about 2 inches of building sand then we completely covered all of it in old carpet, putting two layers over the edges of the solid blocks.

Lay the liner out in the garden (if you have room) to soften in the sun but watch your cats! they love to come and see what your doing. You don't want claw marks in your liner.
Lift the liner over the entire pond and let it sink gently into the sunken areas. Fill slowly with water, get in with bare feet (yes its cold!) and fold carefully if needed and push into place. Don't rush to cut the liner until it has had a chance to settle. Leave a good edge to hold under the top.
